Single Parent Donor Egg

General Information

Single Parent Donor Egg Surrogacy

A single parent looking to build a family can now opt for surrogacy. It is possible! As now more and more individuals have become single parents by choice.

The surrogacy process for single intended parents is the same as for any other intended parents. Also, the benefits and challenges faced are almost the same as couples pursuing surrogacy but with some exceptions. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is used to create an embryo that is then carried to term by a surrogate mother. While many couples are able to use the intended mother’s egg and intended father’s sperm, every single intended parent will need to use an egg donor in surrogacy using donor egg, gestational surrogacy. This is the major difference between single-parent surrogacy and surrogacy for couples.

Note – Find a reputed surrogacy agency that will help you to find a donor and surrogate all at once. Single intended parents may also choose to work with a known donor, for instance with a close friend. Once you have identified your donor egg, the surrogacy process will continue as it would for any other intended parent.

Benefits of Surrogacy for Single Parents

  • Surrogacy using Donor Egg allows individuals to fulfil the dream of parenthood, even without a partner
  • Intended parents have an opportunity to continue biological ties with their child
  • It can create meaningful, long-term relationships between the surrogate
  • In some cases, single-parent surrogacy may be less complicated than adoption
  • There is more control over the surrogacy process than the adoption process
  • You get to choose a surrogate and donor
  • The surrogacy contract is signed ahead of the pregnancy, so you don’t need to worry about the disruption

Note- As a single parent managing time and resources can be challenging. Also, international surrogacy laws may prevent single parents from working with surrogates in some countries.

Who should consider using donor eggs?

  • Same-sex male couples
  • Single men
  • Heterosexual couples when the female partner does not have healthy quality eggs
  • Intended mothers who are carrying genetic conditions that may be inherited by the child

Note – The choice to use an egg donor is a very personal choice and will depend on your individual circumstances.

How to find an egg donor for surrogacy?

It is an intimate and personal choice to select an egg donor for surrogacy. When you are ready to start the process, it will be very important to consider what qualities are most important to you in an egg donor. The first and most important step is that you need to decide whether to find an egg donor through personal connections or through an agency. Also, there are endless egg donation possibilities, available online. Before ticking your checklist remember that it is highly unlikely that you will find one donor who meets all of your specifications in every area.

It is crucial to do careful research and only consider reputable donors who have been thoroughly screened. Decide what are the most important attributes you are looking for in your ideal egg donor. Are you going to prefer an egg donor you know? Or an anonymous donor? If you go for a known donor- you and the child will get an opportunity to form a relationship with them, if you prefer an anonymous donor, this option will provide greater confidentiality and simplifies some of the legal issues.

Note- Surrogacy laws are not generally the same for single parents as they are for couples. Regulations vary from state to state. So, it is very important to consult an experienced surrogacy professional and attorney if you are considering surrogacy as a single parent to better understand surrogacy laws for your state and circumstances.

Also, be ready to ask questions like- are you comfortable to work with a first-time donor, or do you prefer someone who has a history of donating eggs. Factors such as physical characteristics, personality traits are common considerations.
