Embryo freezing

General Information

Embryo freezing is a fertility freezing technique where the embryo formed by combining the eggs and the sperms are preserved. These embryos can be inseminated whenever the couple is ready to start their family through the IVF process. In embryo freezing, both male and female participation is needed.

‘’The first successful pregnancy resulting from freezing the embryo took place in the 1980s’’.

The main goal of freezing embryos is to preserve them for later use. The benefits contain- the alternative to have frozen embryos thawed and transferred to a woman’s uterus in the future without having to undergo stimulation of the ovaries or egg retrieval. With the use of embryo freezing technique, the embryo transfer process will be done without repeating all the steps of in-vitro fertilization. Just transfer the embryo after the physical examination and examining the uterus lining. Another benefit of embryo freezing is that it allows genetic testing.

‘’A person may decide to store an embryo if they hope to become pregnant in the future or also they can decide to donate to others, or donate for medical research.’’

A doctor then extracts the eggs from the ovaries (using an ultrasound machine to ensure accuracy), either for fertilizing in a laboratory of for freezing. Before freezing can take place, suitable embryos should be created. To do so in the laboratory, doctors must harvest and fertilize a few eggs.” align=”left” border_color=”color-theme”]

Who can benefit from Embryo freezing?

  • Same-sex couples and other LGBTQ people who wish to have children
  • People who take medications that affect fertility
  • People with genetic disorders that affect reproduction
  • People who will soon undergo chemotherapy
  • People who are approaching an advanced reproductive age and who are not ready to have children
  • People who suffer from Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome (OHSS)
  • People who are already undergoing IVF or ICSI treatments and would like an option to use the extra embryo if the first IVF cycle was not successful

In this method the embryos are placed in sealed tubes, slowly lowering their temperature. It prevents the embryo’s cell from ageing and reduces the risk of any damage.

In this freezing method, the doctor freezes the cryoprotected embryos so quickly that the water molecules do not have time to form ice crystals. This helps protect the embryos and boosts their rate of survival during thawing.

After the process of freezing is complete, the doctor stores the embryos in liquid nitrogen until they are needed for future use.

Is it safe to use frozen embryos in treatment?

Yes. It is just as safe as using fresh embryos in the treatment.

Note – The cost will vary depending on your individual clinic.

Some facts regarding embryo freezing process

  • Embryos can be frozen at any stage from Day one and day six after egg retrieval
  • Better quality embryos have a better chance for future pregnancy success
  • It is not recommended to use embryos which have been frozen for more than 5 years
  • Couples can opt for preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to test embryos for genetic abnormalities

The success rate for IVF using frozen embryos has been increasing year on year. The birth rate for frozen embryo and thawed embryos was 39 per cent, compared to 20 per cent for fresh embryos.” align=”left” border_color=”color-theme”]
