HyCosy

Studies have proved that around 30% of the problem of infertility is caused due to the blockage in the passage of the woman’s fallopian tubes. This blockage creates a hindrance for the sperm to meet the egg, hence preventing conception. This may happen if you have undergone certain surgeries, ectopic pregnancy or any pelvic infections. To know the exact reason there are various methods, one of them is HyCosy.

What is HyCosy?

Hysterosalpingo-contrast-sonography is a procedure to investigate infertility by scanning the fallopian tubes with the help of advanced ultrasound test. It is an advanced procedure by which the abnormalities of the uterus and ovaries can be checked if any. This is one of the safer alternatives as compared to X-rays so as to avoid the harmful effects of radiation

HyCosy Procedure

HyCosy testing includes a small process in which a contrast agent is injected via a thin catheter which is inserted into the uterus with the help of small tube and a transducer. Firstly, our experts will induce a thin tube through the cervix along with a minimal amount of normal saline fluid to observe any kind of abnormalities such as polyps, fibroids or any other extra growth inside the lining of the uterus. Secondly, a sulphur-based is liquid is then injected into the uterus thus providing the access to the fallopian tubes. This process of fertility testing will let our doctors see a clear picture of the fallopian tubes as well as the uterus. Our doctors will then take the required measurements such as the thickness of uterus, ovaries and endometrium. This process only takes half an hour to complete.

For Whom is HyCosy Testing Suitable?

As mentioned above, one-third of the reason behind infertility is the blockage in the fallopian tubes. This is the reason why HyCosy is performed. This process is suitable for those women who have previously undergone infections like endometriosis, pelvic infections and appendicitis as these infections are likely to hamper the fallopian tubes, ovaries and uterus. Also, the women who want to go through IUI (Intrauterine insemination) are also suggested to take a HyCosy test.
The best time for HyCosy test is on the first or second day of your period. Also, abstinence from sexual intercourse few days before the HyCosy test is advised.

HyCosy V/s Hysterosalpingogram

HyCosy is not the only process where the inside picture of the uterus is depicted. One of the famous techniques is hysterosalpingogram by which the doctors get access to the inside view of the uterus and fallopian tubes through X-Rays in just 5-10 minutes. However, the radiations emitting from this method can cause harm to the patient. If there are any abnormalities present inside the uterus then it can be better assessed by HyCosy as it allows the access to external part of the uterus which is not in the case of HSG. Also, some women have felt that there is less pain in the process of HyCosy as compared to HSG.
