Azoospermia

Azoospermia – Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Azoospermia is a condition that occurs in males when there is no sperm count thus leading to a fertility issue. In men who suffer from this condition, there is no sperm present in their ejaculate. This condition is often present in about 2 percent of the males of the reproductive age and is a clear factor that contributes to the inability of the woman partner to become pregnant.

Azoospermia – What does it Mean?

If a man is diagnosed to be having azoospermia, it means that he does not have any measurable amount of sperm in his ejaculate. This condition is diagnosed when a couple of fertile age is not able to conceive and therefore approach a fertility specialist for testing. One of the tests involves the determination of the sperm count in the male ejaculate. If the count is very low or there is virtually no sperm, then the specialist may recommend additional tests if required. These tests can include semen analysis, which can be done at IVF Spring Fertility by using a technique called speed centrifugation test. This can help to detect sperm that may have been missed by tests performed at less specialized laboratories or at-home conditions.

Causes of Azoospermia

There can be many causes of azoospermia. Some of them are listed below:

Symptoms of Azoospermia

Only a semen analysis completely diagnoses the condition of azoospermia. Abnormal semen conditions can nevertheless be recognized with a few symptoms. A different or unusual colour of semen tending to yellow, green, red or brown is a symptom. In some cases, there may be traces of blood. In other cases, the consistency of the semen may be thicker or thinner than what it should be. In yet other instances, the semen may have a distinct odour and/or may be of very low volume.

Can my Partner become Pregnant if I have Azoospermia?

The answer to this question depends on the diagnosis that has been arrived at by the fertility specialists. The cause of azoospermia has to be ascertained correctly and the doctors will then advise the male patient as to what options are available to aid conception. A ‘no-sperm count’ condition does not necessarily mean that there is no chance of conception for the couple. Fertility specialists have had many successful cases where conception has been possible in spite of having very few sperms instead of the usual millions required for conception.

Can Azoospermia be Cured?

The treatment for azoospermia depends on a number of factors such as the cause of the condition and the type of defect found. As an example, a blockage can sometimes be removed by the doctor through surgery. If the issue is due to hormones, then the doctor may opt for medications which will set right the issue.
